On the afternoon of the 28th January an active cold front passed through from the north. The air temperature fell from 3.2°C to 0.7°C in less than 15 minutes. The front was accompanied by winds gusting to 40mph, heavy snow and visibility less than 100m. The depth of level snow was 6cm but drifting occurred in the strong winds producing snow depths to 75cm in nearby fields
