Wave Type Cloud over Epping and Cambridgeshire

Wave type cloud was again seen over Epping at 1400GMT on Sunday 17th August. The surface wind was light Easterly but the clouds moved slowly northwards. The cloud pattern was seen elsewhere in the area and the photographs below were taken by John Bridge of the Cambridge Gliding Club whilst flying in the Grafham Water area.

John describes the clouds as follows

'The wind below cloud base was about 150 degrees/14 knots. Cloud base was 5200ft above which the wind had veered to 220 degrees/14 knots. As usual, one had to be in the right place at the right time to get into the wave - after several attempts over an hour I took a strong thermal right into the whispies and then moved west away from the cloud to find about 2 knots of wave.'
